About Us

Mesabi Bituminous is a Northern Minnesota based construction company serving a 50 mile radius in the Iron Range area. For over 46 years, our family owned business has left an enormous footprint of high quality projects ranging from; private driveways, commercial parking lots, county roads and small state paving.  If you have been on the streets or parking lots in the Iron Range area, it is more then likely the work has been done by Mesabi Bituminous in the last 46 years. Mesabi Bituminous not only specializes in paving, but can also take construction projects from start to finish. With our pit locations and access to quality material, we are able to give the most competitive pricing along with our high quality work. We have a talented staff of people dedicated to bringing the highest quality of workmanship to our projects. 

Mesabi Bituminous was started in Gilbert Minnesota by Jerry Nemanich and John Nartnik in 1978. Jerry started out logging and after returning from the armed forces in the early 1960s, continued to log and worked for Northern Blacktoppers, which was once a Virginia based paving contractor. He then put himself through college earning a teaching/business degree. Afterwards he then started teaching along with logging on weekends. He then started a driveway paving business called Ely Blacktoppers, which paved after school and in the summers. By the mid 1970s, the work load was growing and he purchased his first asphalt plant. Through extreme hard work and dedication, these two men laid the foundation of the company and the ideals we follow today. In 1999, John retired and through buyout Jerry became the sole owner. In this timeframe Jerry's son Tom bought a share of the company. Growing up , Tom was with his dad any chance available for him to work. After completing a two year civil engineering tech degree, Tom started working full time, along side his dad, for the company. 

Jerry passed away in 2012. After Jerry's passing, Tom, his wife Jen, and other talented key people have continued on with the same ideals the company was built on. Hard work and determination to give the customers the best product for the money they spend, has always been and will remain our goal.
